Heating controls: thermostats, timers and valves
If the heating comes on when it shouldn't, won't come on when it should, or you just can't work the thing on the wall, it's often the controls, not the boiler.
What I get called for
- Room thermostats, wired and wireless
- Timers and programmers
- Motorised valves (the ones that send heat to the radiators or the hot water)
- Thermostatic radiator valves
- Thermostats you can set from your phone, where they suit the system
What happens when I turn up
- Tell me what's happening and send a photo of the controls you've got.
- I check the controls and wiring first, so you're not replacing parts that are fine.
- I fit the new control, set it up, and show you how to use it before I go.
- If I find the problem is inside the boiler, I'll say so, and you'll need a Gas Safe engineer for that part.
Questions
Can you fit a smart thermostat?
Yes. Room-by-room valves and a controller you can set from your phone, where they suit the system. See smart controls. I don't do any work inside the boiler.
My heating won't come on. Is it the boiler?
Not always. It's often a thermostat, a programmer or a motorised valve. I can check those. If it does turn out to be the boiler, you'll need a Gas Safe engineer.
Will you show me how to use it?
Yes. I'll set it up with you before I leave.
