Heating faults away from the boiler

Plenty of heating problems are in the system, not the boiler. Cold radiators, cold at the top, a pump that's stuck or noisy, a valve that's failed, or pressure that keeps dropping because of a leak somewhere on the pipes.

What I get called for

  • Cold radiators, or radiators cold at the top or bottom
  • Bleeding and balancing so every room gets heat
  • Pumps that are stuck, noisy or failed
  • Motorised valves and other system valves
  • Pressure loss caused by leaks on the pipework or radiators
  • Air in the system

What happens when I turn up

  1. Tell me what's happening: which rooms, since when, and what the pressure gauge says if you have one.
  2. I find the cause first. Most of the time it's on the system side and I can sort it.
  3. You get a price before I do the work.
  4. If the fault is in the boiler itself, I'll say so. That's a job for a Gas Safe engineer.

Questions

Why is my radiator cold at the top?

Usually air in it. Bleeding it often sorts it. If it keeps coming back, there may be another fault on the system, which I can look at.

My boiler pressure keeps dropping. Can you help?

Often, yes. It's usually a leak somewhere on the pipes, radiators or valves. I can find that. If it's a fault inside the boiler, you'll need a Gas Safe engineer.

Do you work on boilers?

No. I don't do boiler or gas work. I do everything on the heating system around it.
